Health and Safety Risk Assessments are critical to the safety of staff in any operation. The movement of staff from the windfarm to land can cause problems with conventional boats, requiring the transfer of staff from the boat to a vehicle on the beach. This can cause problems of access by vehicles, and also staff having to move from one vessel to another vehicle.
With the Hovercraft, the transport solution is more elegant, taking staff directly from the windfarm steps to the land, travelling over the beach or difficult terrain. Boat to hovercraft transfers are common, with bow to bow transfers made easy by bow platforms and handholds on each craft.
Helicopter operations can be limited by the length of the rescue line in cases of emergency, the cost of hire and reliability and safety. With a hovercraft, injured staff can be roped down to the bow of the hovercraft, and a stretcher placed in the craft with full emergency medical facilities for immediate treatment and fast transfer times. The hovercraft is also very suited to windfarms that are built on drying areas. With tidal considerations, it is imperative that there is a contingency to evacuate staff.
